PM to meet with UK lawyer amid GBPA feud

Prime Minister Philip Davis is currently in London, where he will meet with a prominent UK lawyer to discuss the ongoing financial dispute between the government and the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA).

The matter revolves around $357 million that the government claims it is owed under the Hawksbill Creek Agreement.

During his visit to the UK capital this week for a series of strategic meetings, Prime Minister Davis has prioritized consultations with legal experts.

Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury, former president of the UK Supreme Court, has been selected by the Davis administration to represent Bahamian interests in this complex legal dispute.

The crux of the dispute lies in Section 1(5)(c) of the Hawksbill Creek Agreement, which mandates that the GBPA reimburse the government for public spending incurred in Freeport.

Specifically, this provision stipulates that costs borne by the government beyond the scope of customs duties and emergency taxes are to be reimbursed by the GBPA.

The Bahamian government contends that the $357 million represents expenditures that it has shouldered on behalf of Freeport.

The GBPA has rejected these claims.
