Prime Minister Philip Davis said today his administration has no intention of increasing water prices for consumers or imposing a tax on private water wells.
“It has been brought to my attention that a headline in the Tribune has caused Bahamians to believe that the government is taking some decision to increase water prices. That is absolutely not true. There is no intention of government to raise water rates at any time nor will we be taxing wells,” Davis said.
The Tribune reported that Water and Sewerage Corporation (WSC) proposed to increase consumer prices or impose taxes on homeowners with water wells. The recommendations were listed in a five-year business plan.
News of a possible increase had been met with consternation by many consumers, who pointed out that many Bahamians cannot afford an increase.
The prime minister said, from as far back as the Pindling Administration, recommendations have been made to tax wells and increase water rates.
“We do not intend to do either, tax wells or raise water rates,” he added.
