Progressive Liberal Party Senator Quinton Lightbourne has announced his resignation from the Senate following his recent appointment as alternate executive director for the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Caribbean constituency.
Lightbourne had previously expressed intentions to continue participating in Senate meetings while balancing his new role in Washington, DC.
He previously stated, “While the appointment requires my presence abroad, I remain committed to my duties as a member of the Senate in The Bahamas. I will be present for Senate proceedings with the aim of adding my voice and bringing meaningful contributions to debates expected to better the lives of Bahamians.”
However, pressure mounted for Lightbourne to step down, prompting his decision to resign.
The Office of the Prime Minister highlighted that he is the youngest Bahamian to hold this prestigious position at the IDB, underscoring the significance of his appointment.
PLP chairman Fred Mitchell had supported Lightbourne's capabilities, asserting he did not foresee any issues with the senator fulfilling his responsibilities while serving abroad. However, he ultimately made the decision to give up his Senate seat.
As Lightbourne moves into this new chapter, the party is left to find a replacement in the Senate.
