Prime Minister Philip Davis proudly announced that his administration has hired over 2,000 Bahamians under the age of 35 since coming to office in September 2021.
Davis emphasized the government's commitment to addressing the frustration felt by young people who believe there are limited opportunities for career advancement.
“Now, we understand that a lot of the frustration has nothing to do with rehires continuing to work, but with the feeling that young people have – that there aren’t enough avenues for them, not enough ladders to success,” Davis stated. “That is why, since September 2021, we have hired over 2,000 young Bahamians under the age of 35.”
According to Davis, these hires represent a significant portion of the workforce in the public service, with nearly 10% of current public servants being young people recruited during the PLP's term in office.
The Prime Minister further highlighted that the hiring process isn't finished yet, noting that more opportunities are on the horizon for young Bahamians.
“That means nearly 10% of the people currently working in the public service are young people we hired during this term,” Davis said. “And we still have hundreds more young persons who will enter our uniform branches and hundreds more young people to be onboarded in the next cohort of the PS-PEP programme.”
Davis also reflected on the transformation of the public service under his administration. He pointed out that significant changes have been made, not only in the number of young people hired but also in the working conditions and benefits offered to public servants.
“The public service these young people are entering is completely different from the one we met in 2021. Public servants, don’t forget. The FNM stopped annual increments. We brought increments back,” Davis reminded the audience.
The Prime Minister underscored the PLP's commitment to improving opportunities for youth in the Bahamas, highlighting both the growing presence of young Bahamians in the public service and the party's dedication to ensuring that the public sector is a place where people can thrive and build lasting careers.
