Munroe says police insurance policy remains active

Minister of National Security, Wayne Munroe, has issued a statement in response to a purported document from the Police Staff Association (PSA) alleging that the government owes over $100 million to the insurance provider, Colina, for the medical coverage of members of the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF).

Munroe confirmed that the medical insurance policy for the RBPF is fully operational, and there has been no interruption in coverage for officers or their families.

“The medical insurance policy is active, and officers remain covered under the terms of the policy," the Minister stated, emphasizing that there has been no lapse in service.

On the matter of the alleged outstanding debt, Munroe explained that following consultations with Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kirkwood Andrews, and Minister of Economic Affairs, Michael Halkitis, it has been confirmed that there is no record supporting the claim that the government owes Colina over $100 million.

Minister Halkitis, he noted, has specifically advised that the figure cited in the document is inaccurate, and no evidence has been provided to substantiate the claim.

Munroe further highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to transparency and open communication, reiterating that both the PSA and all members of the armed services are encouraged to engage through the Ministry’s open-door policy to address any concerns.

“The Ministry of National Security has always encouraged open communication, and we remain available to discuss and address any concerns in a constructive and transparent manner,” he said.

Given the potential impact of the document on the morale of police officers, the Minister also noted that the matter has been referred to the Ministry’s Legal Section for review.
