Michael Johnson quits RBPF, other officers implicated

Former Chief Superintendent Michael Johnson, who was placed on garden leave earlier this year, has officially resigned from the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF), months after controversial voice notes involving him were widely circulated on social media.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force issued a statement today, confirming that the probe into the voice notes has been advanced and is now in the hands of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Cordell Frazier.

According to the police statement, the investigative file was initially submitted to the DPP on December 20, 2024, but after careful review, Frazier requested additional information. The requested details were subsequently forwarded on December 30, 2024.

“The Commissioner of Police wishes to inform that the complex, multifaceted, and thorough investigation into the voice notes involving Chief Supt. Michael Johnson has advanced, and the file is in possession of the Director of Public Prosecution,” the statement read.

The voice notes in question involved an alleged conversation between a police official and a now-deceased wanted man as they negotiated him turning himself into police for questioning then ensuring his release.

The voice notes, which became the subject of widespread discussion across social media platforms over the summer, sparked a formal investigation by the police force.

The police force has also revealed that other officers were implicated in the matter. These findings have been referred to the incoming Deputy Commissioner of Police, who will now take responsibility for the disciplinary actions of the officers involved.

The statement concluded, “We await the recommendation from the DPP regarding the next steps.”
