Central Grand Bahama MP Iram Lewis has opened up about his decision to leave the Free National Movement (FNM) and join the Coalition of Independents (COI), citing a lack of unity and support from the leadership of his former party.
Lewis, who was once a staunch supporter of the FNM, explained that he no longer felt the same sense of camaraderie and backing that he once did within the party. “I did not feel the unity or the support from the leadership that I previously felt,” Lewis said.
The former FNM MP made headlines today when he announced his withdrawal from the party, a move that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape.
"I don’t believe in blind loyalty," Lewis said.
He added he cannot support a party leader who does not want to be checked when he is wrong.
His comments shed light on the growing tensions between him and FNM leader Michael Pintard, as well as deputy leader Shanendon Cartwright, both of whom are facing an increasingly uphill battle to convince voters they are fit to lead the country.
“I believe the Bahamian people will understand that this move is bigger than me," he stated, signaling that his decision to join the COI was driven by a commitment to what he believes is best for the nation.
With the addition of Lewis, the Coalition of Independents has now secured its first seat in the House of Assembly.
