The daughter of Immigration and Financial Services Minister Elsworth Johnson was caught up in a police raid of a popular hangout on Tuesday night.
Police shut down Village Pub, located on Balfour Avenue and Miami Street, and arrested 20 people. It operates as a restaurant and a bar.
Johnson’s daughter and a police officer were among the group of people hanging out without face masks or social distancing when police showed up.
Officers say the Immigration Minister’s daughter tried to pull rank on police as they were arresting her by informing them that her father is Elsworth Johnson. However, they replied, “We don’t care who your father is. You lock up” and proceeded to arrest her.
The group was expected to be arraigned in the Magistrates Court on Wednesday on charges they breached Covid-19 restrictions. However, they were not taken to court today. Insiders say the arraignment is now scheduled for Thursday. However, some officers are skeptical the matter will make it to court because it involves a cabinet minister’s daughter.
Friends have claimed Johnson and his older daughter have a strained relationship and he has said let the chips fall where they may. However, no one believes that.
This is the third time Village Pub has been raided since a state of emergency was declared in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
