Bahamas Moorings project in Exuma cancelled

The Gallery

Bahamas Moorings Ltd. and the Government have decided not to proceed with the previously proposed mooring initiative, amid pushback.

Bahamas Moorings Ltd. expressed its gratitude to the Government for the opportunity to collaborate on a project aimed at protecting the country's invaluable marine environment. The initiative, which had aimed to install 250 moorings at 49 locations across the Exuma chain, was seen as a step toward mitigating the negative environmental impacts of unregulated anchoring, particularly on fragile marine ecosystems such as coral reefs and seagrass beds.

"After thoughtful consideration, both parties have agreed that the mooring venture will not move forward at this time," the company stated. "This decision was not made lightly, as we share the Government's deep commitment to marine conservation, sustainable tourism, and responsible boating practices."

The company noted that while the proposed mooring system would have been an important tool in protecting critical habitats that sustain both biodiversity and The Bahamas' thriving tourism economy, the need for a well-regulated and structured mooring system remains.

“We fully support the Government’s ongoing efforts to explore alternative solutions that align with conservation goals while balancing the needs of local communities and the broader public,” Bahamas Moorings continued. "We deeply appreciate the collaboration with the Government and all stakeholders who have engaged in this important conversation."
