The Church of the West Indies and the broader Caribbean community are praying for the recovery of Archbishop Drexel Wellington Gomez, who has been hospitalized and diagnosed with cancer at the age of 88.
A distinguished leader in the Anglican Church, Gomez served as Archbishop and Primate of the Province of the West Indies from 1996 until his retirement in 2009.
His full title, "His Grace the Most Reverend Drexel Wellington Gomez, Lord Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of the Church of the West Indies & Bishop of the Diocese of Nassau & The Bahamas (Including the Turks & Caicos Islands)," reflects his profound impact on the region's religious life.
Archbishop Gomez was a key figure in the global Anglican community, and in 2003, he was appointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, to the Lambeth Commission on Communion.
The commission's work culminated in the Windsor Report (also known as the Eames Report) published in 2004, which addressed issues of unity within the Anglican Communion.
Known for his wisdom and strong faith, Archbishop Gomez led the Church of the West Indies through numerous challenges during his tenure, advocating for peace and unity.
After retiring from his position as both Bishop of Nassau and Archbishop in 2009, he continued to be an influential voice in the church.
In a statement issued today, Prime Minister Philip Davis extended his heartfelt prayers for Archbishop Gomez’s recovery, offering hope and strength to the 88-year-old during this difficult time.
